I believe that small actions can cause big reactions. Participating in peace project training can lead to creating a place of peace in my community.

IMPACTFUL PEACE PROJECTS

Since 2014, nearly 300 teams of young peacebuilders have designed and implemented peace project ideas through Youth & Peace in Action and NewGen Peacebuilders. Below are final project presentations from select projects completed through the Leading Peace Project Teams experience available through YPA.

"I want to continue to grow my understanding of the people in my community, and lift them up in the process."

focus on the environment

Surveys around the world indicate that young people increasingly see the opportunity to live in clean environment as a human right. Fears about the future state of the environment have led some students to conduct school walkout campaigns. What about the role of young peacebuilders right now?

While some cities in Florida are taking action to resolve environmental issues in their communities through service-based projects, many cities are not taking the time to educate their citizens about environmental issues. This project will increase the environmental literacy of young people by implementing an online course for students in grades 4-12. The team hopes to provide a fun and engaging course to get students involved and excited about helping the environment. By featuring prompts/activities at the end of each lesson and offering service hours to high school students who complete the program, the team aspires to create a space where students can increase their environmental knowledge and advocate for change.

shape school culture

School cultures are influenced by society, and society is affected by what happens at schools. So, if we want more peaceful communities, what do we do within schools and what role do students play?

This peace project will establish student-to-student mentoring sessions over the course of the 2022-2023 school year. The mentors will be high school seniors with over two years more experience taking courses at a local college through the school’s dual enrollment program. The goal is to provide younger students with motivation and guidance throughout their high school experience to help improve attendance rates, SAT/ACT scores, and overall GPA, resulting in more students participating in the dual enrollment program. In doing so, more students in this rural community can elect to pursue a secondary education.

welcome new neighbors

Immigration is movement of people from one country to another to live, study, or work. In sheer number, there are more people in the US who are immigrants than in any other country, and everyone except native peoples has an ancestry linked to immigrants. A refugee is someone who migrates by force or due to fear of harm in a home country. The transition is typically hard.

The FUMA peace project involves utilizing a network of high-school students and refugee-based organizations that are local to Charlottesville, a city with a substantial refugee population in need. Using this network of student and/or local volunteer tutors, the FUMA team will design and implement an (initially) small language and cultural education initiative for local refugee/immigrant children in need of tutors and resources. This extracurricular program will allow newly arrived refugee students — particularly those from Afghanistan — to learn, practice, and enjoy improving language skills and adapt to life in the United States.
